‘Like Summer Rain’ opens with a serene setting of strings in F major, with Harp arpeggiating the chords as first violins and doubled with the French horns which play the theme. The melody then goes up an octave to a contrasting minor section for five bars in the violins, before a faster, sweeter section appears with high, divided strings playing the melody in fully voiced-chords and shimmering colors like glockenspiel, harp, and celesta play the counterlines; the bass voices are omitted to give a higher and more sparse “airy” sound. Finally, a concluding trilling section of strings gives a gossamer glow to the French horn solo and the piece comes to a peaceful close.
