‘Piano Concertante’ is a movement that nods to a distinctively Mozartian sound, particularly scored in his traditional Piano Concerto style. The piano solo (or harpsichord) takes center stage as the rest of the orchestra move in predictable classical ways, curves are thrown however as the piano showcases its unique ability to cover a wide range of registers, and moves the piece into a climatically heightened sense of drama until the orchestra takes over in resplendent fullness. A four-part fugue is then developed in the orchestra without the piano for added contrast and evolves in key centers until it departs from the established central key then returns back. The restrained orchestra calmly provides an elegant accompaniment once again, as the solo piano returns to complete the movement in a classically-inspired dramatic climax and concludes with a quick bow back in its original key.
