‘Nico Steals the Black Mirror’ opens with a rarely used dense, low, divided chord in the double basses. As the stark movement unravels, French horns play an ascending line and trumpets are added, most unusually, below them. Timpani gives the impetus for the piece to twist in a new, in tempo section, as a low, solo piano ostinato is played against crashing dissonances in horns, then trumpets, then scurrying, off-the-string violins playing a Lutoslawski-like division of divisi strings that create an ambiance of creeping, crawling insects. Suddenly, bombastic bursts of powerful orchestral explosions erupt into flourishes of brilliant, but darkly orchestrated moments as ostinatos and returning low piano solos frame the movement together. A quick, rising motif is orchestrated upward across sections of the orchestra until high strings play a quiet, dissonant, cluster in harmonics against the piano motif that has been transferred to harp in its highest register.
