‘Introducing Captain Sanson of Port Royal’ is a demanding, rousing and complex piece that makes use of great orchestral tuttis and thematic melodies that harken back to Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Errol Flynn scores. Beginning with a trumpet fanfare, cymbals, trombones, and horns play on after-beats as the Straussian string lines rise upward towards a parade of French horns playing high, dramatically enthralling triplet fanfares against strings and a battery of military percussion. The swift twists and turns in the music are reflexive of the many Warner Brothers’ action sequences in the classic movies of the 1940s. Modernized with music that is robust, agile, and very virtuosic, this piece is sure to be an excellent encore or curtain-raiser for any orchestra performance. As the music changes harmonic key centers, all the while bouncing melodies and varying harmonic and orchestrational textures, it concludes with a rapidly descending scale from an extreme high to a sudden low trilling in the violins as the low cellos and basses play a descending and menacing melodic line.
